One of the things that has stayed the same about the iPhone since its release is the use of a SIM card. However, Apple is thinking about changing the way these are incorporated into the phone. Currently, the SIM card can be removed and put in, but this may not be sustainable for Apple's quest to make the iPhone have no ports so it can be fully waterproof.
The eSim is a chip that is soldered to the phones circuit board, as opposed to a chip that’s inserted into the phone. Apple has already started implementing the use of this technology in their Apple Watch 3 and many expect Apple to add this to their phones next.
