Dear The broad and lingering smile, the determined voice and deep laugh, the clarity of purpose – even if you’ve only seen our beloved Vivian Silver at a distance, you surely know who she is and that she has devoted her life to co-existence and women’s empowerment. Speaking to the broadcaster Al Jazeera in Oct 2017 during our Journey to Peace, Vivian said, “We must reach a political agreement. We must change the paradigm that we’ve been taught for seven decades now, where we’ve been told that only war will bring peace. We don’t believe that anymore. It’s been proven that it’s not true.” Vivian emigrated to Israel from Canada as a young woman 50 years ago. She quickly became a cornerstone of our movement after retiring as Executive Director of the Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development (NISPED) and as Co-Director, with Amal Elsana Alh’jooj, of the Arab Jewish Center for Empowerment, Equality, and Cooperation (AJEEC). We know from the last WhatsApp message she was able to send this past Saturday morning, Oct. 7, 2023, that Hamas militants had entered her home in Kibbutz Be’eri on the Gaza border and that she was hiding in her safe room behind a door. We are also deeply concerned about Ditza Heiman, 84, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, who repeatedly called for help and no one answered. Ditza is the mother of long time WWP member Neta Heiman-Mina. Like Vivian and Ditza there are dozens of women, men, girls and boys, babies and elders. We call on all those who can act and impact this dire situation: keep Vivian, Ditza, and all other hostages safe and return them home now! Listen to Vivian Silver talking about Women, Peace and Security, at the ALLMEP annual conference May 31, 2022. |
